RAISING A VILLAGE

In 1994, Paul Houston became the executive director of the American Association of School Administrators, and until his retirement in 2008, he served as a brilliant and tireless advocate for breaking down the barriers between schools and communities. To this day he continues to write and speak out for equitable education for all students.

It’s startling how much we have in common. Both of us were called “slow,” and neither of us would have been a good bet for adult success. We’re both “right-brain” people, thinking metaphorically and holistically. A caring adult made the crucial difference in each of our young lives, helping us believe in ourselves and reject the negative labeling.

Paul Houston’s credo was clear, and it was very good news for community leaders who wanted to be involved in stopping the dropout epidemic:

The schools have to change, they have to involve communities, parents, the greater world. It’s the only way they’re going to be able to keep kids in school. I tell superintendents: “You have to stop thinking of yourselves as superintendents of schools and start thinking of yourselves as superintendents of education, of learning.” There’s a big difference.
